Finding archived caches

Postby Trail Blaisers » Tue Nov 18, 2008 10:47 pm

I'd like to find out where all the archived local caches were hidden. Is there anyway to do this other than going through Remote Sensor's finds from the early days of caching?

I don't think you will be able do that with any of the GC.com search function. The only place I have found them have been in people's profiles, either as a finder or the hider.

I have kept a database of Kingston Archived caches, some from RS's profile and others that I have stumbled across. I can send you a copy of the GPX file if you want. Let me know.
Where are we going? And why am I in this handbasket?

I've heard that you can claim an archived cache, is that true?

I can supply an almost full list, but there is one I would have to hunt down for you. Only some old timers from Ottawa claimed a find on this one cache.

Yes it's true. I've posted finds for caches that had already been archived. While the cache page will no longer turn up during a search, you can still find it if you know the GC#, or go through the owner's profile or a previous finders profile. Once you've found it you can still log it as found or post a note.
Two caches I've found after they were archived were Wolfie, and Telephone Bay.

My understanding is that you can claim the find if the cache and log are still in place. I've done it once as well on the Wolfie cache mentioned earlier by ace862.

Note: Cache containers on archived caches are if not removed by the owners are sometimes considered garbage and removed by others depending on the situation.

Good point Paul. That goes without saying of course. It's generally considered bad mojo to log a find on a cache you have never actually found.

Here is one that you may not know of.

http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=24506502-4c51-47a3-8705-2a9d54ca6778&log=y

Some of the earlier caches I can recall were:

The Fort, Wolfie, Inner Harbour, Lafleur Park and a few others.

The oldest cache in Kingston and the very first placed was "Rideau0"

The oldest in Frontenac P.P. was Divergence.
