Ontario Trails Mapping Project

Postby swimmrguy » Wed Apr 29, 2009 10:33 pm

From a post in the OGA forums, I discovered that northernpenguin as started a project of collecting track data for any trails in Ontario. He is converting them into Garmin map formats, so you can add them to your GPS. If you are interested, take a look at his site here.

I would also recommend that if you record your tracks when hiking, that you consider cleaning up the tracks then sending them to him. It would be great to have this as complete a map as possible.

Another idea--may be we could 'piece together' some of the longer trails that maybe none of us has from start to end. The Cat Trail and Rideau Trail immediately come to mind on that one. If you have bits of those trails, feel free to send them to me and I can start the job of piecing them together.

FYI, I just sent my tracks from some trails in Algonquin Park, Frontenac Park, Marble Rock, Rock Dunder and Little Cat. I had one trail from Charleston Lake that I also included.

northernpenguin is working hard at continually updating the coverage of the Ontario Trails project. Let me put this plug in for submitting your tracks to him to make the maps even better!

In his latest update, he has added support for Magellan GPS units.

You can find the project here.
