Umilik reached the major milestone of 1000 finds today at http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=e3c9d082-16bc-494b-86b5-706486322a37
Congratulations Umilik!
I met Umilik in the spring of 2007. He seemed to be a very intelligent and knowledgable man, and the topic soon turned to geocaching. He knew all about it, but had never actually found a cache. I, being an experienced cacher with almost 20 finds under my belt, goaded him to make his first find. When I met him again a few days later he still hadn't made the find. So I made it clear that I would kick his ass if I saw him again and he hadn't logged his first find. Clearly the thrill of the sport took hold, he made the find, and my boot was spared. Little did I know the trouble I had started. That spring he kept finding caches at an incredible rate, and before I had found 70, he had already found 80.
Always an eager caching companion, I was fortunate to cache with him often. We shared several FTF's (including one today http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=13bed1b4-9b8d-49c2-8fb9-c7c5066de18b ) and many adventures (like Pirates of the St Lawrence http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=cdc165e1-bf2c-4a1a-a86c-05a39252fc0f ). I'm glad to report that many of these were found by bike, boat, dinghy, canoe and foot (without a car). A personal highlight was the blustry, dark night we found hypocorism's white night brights http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=107381d0-3329-45df-9346-1f690b6e0378. This hide took caching to a new and exciting level for me. More recently, Umilik brought me and a carload of young cachers to the new Yellow Night Brights course http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_de ... e63c48b52d , which was almost as thrilling, as the kids searched the woods for coyotes while we marched in the dark to the cache.
Always ready to cache and eyes like a hawk...a well earned milestone!
