Custom Icons GSAK to Mapsource

Postby sakidoo » Fri Mar 06, 2009 11:26 am

Good morning,
Let me first start by congratulating KAG for the superb tutorials. Thanks to them, I successfully loaded custom icons into my Garmin 60CsX. I am however having difficulty loading the same icons into Mapsource. I managed to generate the Documents.gdb file however they still don't appear into Mapsource. When the task is completed, I get the message "Mapsource could not find any installed MapSource map products". I am currently using V6.15.3 of Mapsource and it works fine. I have copied the Documents.gdb file into any Garmin directory I could find and still can't see the icons. Any advice?
Thanks
Sakidoo Suzanne

Sakidoo,

Thanks for the kind words about the tutorials. I am glad you found them useful.

To get custom icons in Mapsource, there are a few additional steps
--you have to copy the icons to a specific folder: My Documents--My Garmin--Custom Waypoint Symbols
--these icons, although they look the same, need to be named differently than how they are named for sending to the GPS. If you use the zip file with the tutorial, you will find the files with the correct name in the "Mapsource" subfolder in the zip file.
--You have to make sure that you have set up the Mapsource export settings in GSAK to use the same macro as you do with the 'send to gps'.

If you have done all these things, send me an email or private message. I might be able to help you more specifically if we chat in real time. If you are not sure that you've done all this, it is described in the Part 2 video of the custom icon tutorial.

--SG
Where are we going? And why am I in this handbasket?

Hi there Swimmerguy,
Thanks for the info. I decided to retry this today and I believed that I followed the steps to a T. But nadda. Could it perhaps be the 'default link' for the mapsource file field that in on the screen when I follow the step "File / export to mapsource". I am not using POI. Could that be why? The other point of consideration is that my mapsource is running out of a directory called BAD GARMIN rather than GARMIN. I had to set it up that way because I was having so much difficulty with running Mapsource. As a result, my Mapsource works fine now. I rather wonder if it's because of that that I can have the custom waypoints appear in Mapsource. I did copy all the Mapsource Symbols in this directory but again in vain. It may be a lost cause for me but on the off chance that it makes any sense to you, I'd be happy to discuss.
Cheers,
Suzanne

Suzanne,

Any chance are you on MSN/Windows Live Messenger? If so, maybe we could chat one evening online. Windows Live has a great Remote Assist function where you would be able to show me your computer screen, and I'd be able to help you directly. I won't be around much for the next week or so (it just so happens I'll be in Ottawa after spending the weekend at Spring Fling).

Just let me know, and I will see if I can help you figure it out.

Cheers,
Bob
