SNC Geocoin

Postby Starkiller » Tue Feb 09, 2010 5:30 pm

Hi!

I’ve recently had the pleasure of caching through Kingston. I love the high cache density, diversity of available styles, and the creativity that went into so many of them. I would like to inform you of a project I’m involved with…

South Nation Conservation is in the process of designing and minting a geocoin. We would like to sell this coin at cost to geocachers in the area (for approximately $10). We are aiming to have these coins in our hands this spring.

When KAG made its geocoin, how many were sold?

To help us know what to expect, I was wondering approximately how many people in the KAG area might be interested in purchasing a coin? At this time we aren’t looking for commitments or preorders, but we want to make sure we have enough to satisfy local demands.

We are still in the design process with Landsharkz, so if anyone thinks of any particular geocoin design elements, I’ll take them into consideration.

Thanks,

Star

Neat to see a CA getting even more involved into geocaching.

Must truly be the off season if a CA has time for coins! :)

Tributaries must be frozen or quite low for benthics and baseflow!

Since it is a CA coin, my initial vote is something with Source water protection or land stewardship. Might generate more buzz about other things CA's are involved with.

Could put a stream, flowing, with benthics crawling up the side.. kind of show the larval stage to nymph to adult in the air?

Could do minnows of the water too.. doubt you could put a species at risk from your tributaries, but something like that might appeal to people who have tossed a bobber in the water at some point.

Could put snakes, turtles, frogs, skinks.. perhaps one specific in your jurisdiction???

If you want more, feel free to msg me. Cheers!

Trust me, it definitely is not just a make-work project- In fact I have little time to focus on it... But communications staff are interested in finding new and creative ways to reach out with and make a connection with people (and geocachers) in and around our watershed.

If the geocaching program experiences continued enthusiasm and positive results, other CAs might even follow SNC's lead.

Thanks for your suggestions!

These geocoins have been created and are shipping to me at this time. I expect them to arrive within the week.

I will be spending a few days in Kingston on the coming weekend, and if there is interest from the KAG I can meet up with Geocachers who are interested in purchasing them.

Gold metal or Nickel (Silver) materials (same Price). Normal size (1.5 inches)

Price: $10.00 each, 5 for $45.00, all taxes included. I can take cash or Cheque.

I can make myself available with the coins on Sunday evening and/or Monday evening. Assuming there is not a large gaggle of geocachers, I propose a casual meeting at a nearby Tim Hortons. The most convenient location for me is at Union and King Street ( 44° 13.240'N 76° 31.258'W).

If you are interested in a coin, please post your interest here. This will help me to gauge how many coins/change I should have on hand. If you are interested in purchasing but can't make it, I suggest you contact a geocacher to make the purchase on your behalf.

I will probably be through Kingston a few more times in the months to come, but I expect them to be popular purchases and to sell out.

On Thursday or Friday I'll repost here, and confirm selling times and locations based on KAG demand. Looking forward to meeting some of you!

Hi,

Would you be able to post a picture of the coin, or a link to a picture?
Was it already posted someplace and I missed it?

Thanks

Picture not available at this time. I will post some as soon as they arrive, but it won't be until Friday night at the earliest. They will be great looking, but by all means wait until you see them with your own eyes :)

I tried to post this yesterday, but evidently the post didn't go through.

See this link for both sides of the new SNC geocoin: http://www.nation.on.ca/images/Site/Image/SNC_GEOCOIN_SAMPLE.jpg

When I link the picture directly the image comes out cropped. Image
