What GPS to buy

Postby stamper » Mon May 11, 2009 9:59 am

Hi

I'm looking into buying a GPS and diving into the world of the geocaching but I don't know which one to get.

I'm thinking the yellow Garmin which is around $100 at walmart might be my purchase but I don't know if its got all the bells and whistles I need for this sport.

Thanks

stamper,

Welcome to the KAG forum and to the addiction otherwise known as geocaching.

To answer your question, the basic Garmin eTrex (aka the eTrex yellow) doesn't contain any bells and whistles. The good news is that you don't need bells and whistles to find geocaches!

The limitations of the eTrex yellow are: you cannot load maps onto it, and it doesn't come with a cable to upload waypoints (meaning you will have to enter geocache coordinates by hand.) You can buy the cable separately but it isn't cheap and since it is a serial cable, you might need to buy a USB-to-serial adapter. The newer units usually accept maps and have USB connectivity.

There was a recent thread that discussed the same question. You can find it here.

You will find lots of opinions and friendly advice around here. Don't be shy in asking any more questions you have.

Cheers!
