Internet Provider(s) and VoIP

Postby SuperDave_GPS » Mon Mar 30, 2009 2:59 pm

Hello all:

I will be moving to Kingston this July (2009), and am wondering if I could get some recommendations on providers for high-speed internet and VoIP providers.

Here in Ottawa, I currently have a high-speed Sympatico account, and use Primus VoIP for my day-to-day home phone use (for my purposes and my extremely limited phone useage, Primus works out to $10 per month less than Vonage).

I assume that both accounts can easily be switched over to Kingston without any difficulty, however I wonder if there may be cheaper, yet just as good alternatives out there.

Another option is that I also have my iPhone with something like 200 anytime minutes per month-ish, of which I normally only use about 4 or 5 minutes per month (seriously..). I wonder if I can cancel my Primus VoIP and just use my cell phone as my main home phone, and whenever I'm in my house, use my phone connected to Skype, or the equivalent, to make long-distance calls.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to all.

.. To elaborate, basically all that I need is some form of high-speed internet in my home, and a way to make both local and the odd long distance phone call cheaply.

Currently, my Sympatico high-speed is about $60 (after tax), and my Primus VoIP is about $30 (after tax), for a monthly total of aprox $90 per month.

With my iPhone, I'm on the cheapest plan that I could get, but with all the fees and service charges and crap, it works out to about $45 per month just for voice, plus $30 per month for the data plan.

So, my internet, home phone, and iPhone total about $165 per month. Surely there must be something cheaper out there considering that I only use my phone for about 5 minutes per month..

Thanks again.

Hey SD!
I've been with Cogeco, the local cable provider here, for some time now. I haven't really ever had many problems with them. You'd have to look into cost. We've bundled our Digital Cable, Digital Phone, and High Speed internet into one bill.
Cogeco has a calculator on there website Here so you can look at different options of services.
Of course they give you a deal for the first year and then after that it looks to be around $90 for phone and internet.
Not sure if it's the best deal around, but like I said, I haven't really had any complaints with it.
Cheers! B)
